|Meal arrangements: One home cooked dinner during stay in KyotoMorning sightseeing tour of Kyoto visiting Nijo Castle, Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), Handicraft centre. Afternoon at leisure.
Nijo Castle near the Imperial Palace contains several unique examples of architecture and design from the 17th Century. The best known section of the splendid interior, with its murals and carvings on the walls, is the Happo-nirami-no-Shishi-zu, in which the eyes of the painted lion appear to look straight at viewers no matter where they are standing in the room. Some of its interesting devices used in defense against enemies are also worth a look. They include the Uguisubari-no-roka corridor, where the planks make a sound like a nightingale’s song when walked upon, and the Musha-kakushi, special doors designed to hide guards, both must-see attractions. Kinkakuji is a breathtaking gold plated temple set in a beautiful tranquil garden. This Kyoto icon is unforgettable. Kyoto is also renowned for its culture and handicrafts and you will get a chance to see many of them at the Kyoto Handicraft centre, where one can buy anything from kimonos to damascene jewellery and woodblock prints.
